Martin Isark has tasted Asda Extra Special Speyside 12 Year Old Single Malt Whisky
I’ve tasted Asda’s Extra Speyside 12 Year Old Single Malt Whisky … should you put a bottle in the trolley or leave it on the shelf?
Asda’s Extra Special Speyside 12 Year Old Single Malt Whisky blurb reads: ‘12 years old. Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Wonderfully fragrant with top notes of pear drops & rose petal. The inviting bouquet leads to a fascinating balanced taste with clear hints of vanilla & citrus fruits. The after taste is long & mildly dry. Speyside is a sub-region of the Highland malt whisky producing region, situated on the east coast of Scotland. The Speyside region produces come of the finest malts in Scotland, renowned for their floral & fruity characteristics.’
OK – what does Asda’s Malt Speyside Whisky label mean? Speyside? It is a whisky from the Speyside area of Scotland’s Highland region. 12 Year Old? The whisky has a spent minimum of 12 years ageing in oak barrels and single means that it comes from just one distillery. Of course Asda can’t put the name of the distillery on the label, but, do we know which of Speyside’s many distilleries does this Own Branded 12 year old malt comes from? NO – but it delivers a similar to taste profile to The Glenlivet. But things could change a few weeks down the shelves! Why? Asda could of course change to one of Speyside’s other distilleries without changing the label. That’s the risk or the advantage you take when you’re buying an own brand single malt whisky. Sláinte.
The tasting note: Want an easy drinking Speyside malt whisky that’s finished with a sherried lick? if the price fits – put a bottle of this in the trolley.
Can you drink it? Made from barley malt, but the distillery process dictates that it is suitable for people avoiding gluten.
Should you put it in the trolley? Enjoy the sweeter style of malt whiskies? Then this is a bargain on all fronts – put as many in the trolley as you can afford.
