Tasted: Clearspring Miso Soup

CS777-12-12 Miso on the Go White OL - with kuzu OG

By Veggie Tom
While this is quite pricey for a single drink, this little block of flavour turns into a really delicious mug of miso soup in the space of an instant, with nice big seaweed leaves and not much powdery residue.

The product
Britain has a habit of taking Asian food and turning it into trash. Pot Noodle, a product which should really list “despair” among its principal ingredients, took its inspiration from the infinitely loftier noodle dishes of the East; and when our nation’s food producers discovered the quick, tasty joy that is miso soup, they dreamed up a Western equivalent in Cup-a-Soup – the gastronomic equivalent of running the original dish through a laminator.

The verdict:
Where Western instant soups get their taste from salt and flavourings, miso soup’s punch comes from a fermented soy bean paste called miso. It may not sound delicious, but neither (once you describe the production process) do beer, cheese, Thai fish sauce and many of the other gastronomic greats. Fermentation brings a deep, rich, hard-to-put-your-finger-on flavour that’s just bursting with umami. And this Clearspring single-serve pack, which comes in a cute little block that instantly turns into soup, is an extremely good example. The only downside is that it costs over £1.
