Tasted: Dirty Stop Out Smoked Oat Stout
Like gargling with porridge – in a good way. This moreish, tongue-coating stout has bags of earthy flavour.
Dirty Stop Out is a smoked oat stout from Newport brewery Tiny Rebel. This 5% ABV has a bit of a buzz behind it, picking up the title of Champion Beer of Wales at the Great Welsh Beer & Cider Festival in June. Does the bottled version, which has been available for around six months, have the clout to match the reputation.
Oat stouts don’t necessarily taste oaty, but they bring extra fats and proteins which up the viscosity, making them a chewier than your average stout. And Dirty Stop Out has texture to spare – it has a tongue-coating thickness, like gargling with porridge. The smokiness is low, more of a subtle flavour enhancer than a taste on its own, which lends extra grit to an already earthy ale. It’s an impressive drink.
