Tasted: Heinz Classic Barbecue Sauce

By Veggie Tom
Heinz sauces are hard to beat – and this sweet, slightly smokey barbecue sauce is no different.

The product:
Some people only need ketchup and mayo in their cupboards, but I’m a true sauce junkie. For me, no portion of chips is complete without a squirt of tartare, a squeeze of barbecue and a blob of deli mustard in the corner. There’s plenty of competition among barbecue sauce brands, so how does the biggest name in condiments shape up?

The verdict:
This is a seriously satisfying sauce. For depth of flavour, it won’t quite beat the pricey American imports you see on the shelves of Waitrose or M&S (and online at Amazon) – but if you’re looking for a reasonably-priced, easy-eating partner to takeaway foods, Heinz hits all the right notes.

Marks & Spencer Tomato Ketchup
Not as solid on the plate as Heinz, and a slightly deeper colour, which will not fool Heinz loyalists. Although its sweet, sour and tomato flavours are in balance, Heinz still has the edge for palate satisfaction. Tasted by Martin Isark.
