Tasted: Hodmedod’s British Baked Beans 400g
By Vegan Caroline
These are quality, home made style beans with the right balance of flavours.
Hodmedod’s is a British bean brand whose range also encompasses quinoa, kabuki peas and black badger peas. The main staple of the range though is the fava bean appearing in dried, split and tinned forms as well as in dhal and baked beans. The fava bean is one of the oldest plants in existence being eaten in Ancient Greece and Rome and in Britain since the Iron Age. It’s actually a member of the pea family and grows in pods.
The first impression of these beans wasn’t great as the sauce looks very runny compared to the usual baked bean experience and I did warm these longer than the suggested five minutes to reduce the sauce. The flavours are knockout though. There’s a nice sweetness and aesthetically the big, plump beans are pleasing to the eye. These are the sort of home made baked beans you’d expect to find in a gastro pub breakfast. I have to say I’m not really a fan of standard baked beans but I loved these.
