I expect more flavour from an IPA at this strength – but this supermarket offering is simplistic and dull. Look for Sierra Nevada or Goose Island pale ales instead.

The product
So far Morrisons’ Specially Selected range hasn’t come up to scratch – but can their IPA break the pattern? This time it’s Marstons Brewery providing the liquid inside the bottle. Best known for its English pale ale, Pedigree, the Burton-on-Trent brewery actually owns a weighty portfolio of brewery brands that claim a solid share of supermarket shelf space, including Banks’s, Ringwood and Wychwood.

The verdict:
A fine India Pale Ale is a beautiful thing – an object lesson in hoppy refreshment. This is not a fine India Pale Ale. Its light, simple and too boringly bitter, with far less flavour than you’d expect from the strength of 5.8%. It’s drinkable, but very dull.
