Tasted: Pinot Noir

If you buy your red burgundy from a top-notch traditional wine merchant or direct from one of Burgundy’s great Pinot Noir producers, then at a price, red burgundy has no equals. Unfortunately though, most red burgundies found at UK’s supermarkets, are at their worst barely drinkable, and at their best, poor value for money. Want to drink some decent Pinot Noir? Go straight to the New Zealand & Aussie shelves.
Pinot Noir from New Zealand? Most New Zealand Pinot Noirs are well-crafted, and deliver aromas and flavours similar to that of a youthful red burgundy. Always worth a punt if the price fits.
Pinot Noir from Australia? Australian Pinot Noirs are well-crafted, but most are a grape or two below the ones from New Zealand.
All the Pinot Noirs tasted were of excellent quality, but the real star of the show was New Zealand’s Ara Single Vineyard Pinot Noir at a grape under twelve quid from Waitrose.
