Not to be confused with yeast extract or brewers yeast nutritional yeast is a different beast altogether. Known amongst the vegan world as ‘nooch’ and often referred to as cat nip for vegans, these little yellow flakes comes from the Saccharomyces Cerevisiae fungi, which is grown on molasses and then harvested, washed, and dried with heat to kill or “deactivate” it.
The only off putting thing about Nutrritional Yeast apart from the name is how it looks with it’s little yellow flakes. Once you get past that though it’s easy to get hooked on this stuff. It really has a unique taste and is great as a condiment. I’ve tried it in place of cheese sprinkling it on risotto and chilli to good effect. It also works really well in sauces, in bechamel sauces for lasagnes or cheesy sauces for nachos or macaroni.

The full ingredient list: Dried inactive yeast.
Yeast? This particular yeast provides one of the richest natural sources of B group vitamins around along with zinc and folic acid. The way it’s grown ensures it is free from candida albicans yeast and GMOs.
Can you eat it? Suitable for vegetarians and vegans and according to the website free of nuts too.
