I’ve tasted The Food Doctor Bulgar Wheat and Quinoa Wholesome Pot with Tomatoes, Black Olives and Basil … should you put a pot in the trolley or leave it on the shelf?

The Food Doctor Bulgar Wheat and Quinoa Wholesome Pot with Tomatoes, Black Olives and Basil  blurb reads: ‘Just add boiling water to enjoy. Delicious and healthy instant meal satisfaction, with no guilt or negative health implications. A delicious meal of bulgar wheat and quinoa flavoured with tomato, black olive and basil.

OK: Shop bought lunch options for vegans are pretty thin on the ground and most of us who go out to work resort to making packed lunches. I know there’s the odd noodle in a pot thing that we could eat but I always find the idea of E numbers and MSG very off putting. The idea of a healthy pot without any nasties where you just add boiling water intrigued me. But did it taste any good?

The tasting note: It’s not as instant as you might think. You need to wait around 10 minutes after you’ve added the water and I was worried that it would cool off. However, the foil lid kept it to a good temperature. The contents were surprisingly tasty and I would happily buy this again. It would also be a great product to take when travelling (I’m thinking hotel room snack) or when camping. The portion isn’t huge but alongside a piece of fruit for my lunch this did keep me full all afternoon. This was my favourite out of the three pots in the range that I tried.

The full ingredient list: Dried Bulgar Wheat (55%), Dried Quinoa Flakes (15%), Tomato Powder, Chicory Fibre, Sunflower Seeds, Dried Vegetables (Tomato, Onion, Courgette), Yeast Extract, Red Pepper Powder, Onion Powder, Vegetable Oil, Dried Herbs (Basil, Parsley, Mint), Dried Black Olive Pieces, Garlic Powder, Dried Lemon Peel, Ground Black Pepper.

Quinoa? It’s actually a seed that you cook like a grain and originates from South America. It’s known as a Super food and is considered a complete protein and is therefore popular with veggies. It’s high in iron and calcium and on it’s own it’s also gluten free.

Can you eat it? Suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Contains wheat, gluten and yeast.

Should you put it in the trolley? As a healthy, quick, hot snack with no added nasties this is tasty and good value for money.
