I’ve tasted Dell’ Ugo Organic Leaf Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli… should you put a pack in the trolley or leave it on the shelf?
Organic Leaf Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli blurb reads: Delicate organic egg pasta parcels filled with tender leaf spinach and creamy ricotta cheese.
OK: Spinach and ricotta is the default veggie filling for many fresh stuffed pasta ranges. With fresh, good ingredients, it’s a simple and delicate combination. But cut the quality and it becomes so bland that you might as well be eating milk and lettuce. Can Dell’ Ugo’s version succeed where some supermarket versions fail?
The tasting note: Two words: Vegetarian Cheddar. By adding this to the mix, it gains a savoury, salty tang that makes all the difference. It helps that the pasta, and the other ingredients, are clearly good quality. Is it cheating to stick some proper cheese in your spinach and ricotta? If it makes it taste nice, who cares?
The full ingredient list: Organic Pasta (40%) contains Organic Durum Wheat Semolina, Organic Pasteurised Liquid Egg (19%), Water. Organic Spinach and Ricotta Filling (60%) contains Organic Spinach (37%), Organic Ricotta (37%) (with Lactic Acid), Organic Cheddar, Organic Breadcrumbs, Sea Salt, Organic Nutmeg, Organic Black Pepper. Breadcrumbs contains Organic Wheat Flour, Salt, Yeast.
Can you eat it? Suitable for vegetarians – but it’s not dairy or gluten-free.
Should you put it in the trolley? Spinach and ricotta can be so bland, but the addition of a vegetarian Cheddar cheese is a smart move, adding extra savoury tang to this great quality, well-seasoned pasta.
