I’ve tasted Linda McCartney Vegetarian Sausages… should you put a pack in the trolley or leave them on the shelf?

Linda McCartney Vegetarian Sausages blurb reads:  A blend of soya protein and natural flavours make this superb vegetarian sausage.

OK:  Gone are the days when barbecues and fried breakfasts meant veggies had to miss out. But vegetarian sausages vary hugely in taste and texture – so how to Linda McCartney’s compare?

The tasting note: These really are the gold standard. Even some meat eaters like them, which is saying something. They cook up to a nice crisp outer coating and a satisfyingly toothsome texture on the inside – and the seasoning stops them being bland.

The full ingredient list: Water , Textured Soya Protein (17%) , Soya Concentrate , Vegetable Oil , Flavourings , Rusk , Stabiliser: Methyl Cellulose, Tomato Puree , Textured Soya Protein contains: Soya Concentrate , Flavourings contain: Dextrose, Salt, Onion, Yeast Extract, Colour Red Iron Oxide , Rusk contains: Wheat flour, Salt, Raising Agent: Ammonium Carbonates.

Methyl Cellulose? Or E461 to you and me – used a thickener and emulsifier, it’s synthetic, indigestible and non-toxic. Also used in some ice-creams and toothpastes, and to make the slime in the movie Ghostbusters. Don’t let that put you off the sausages, though.

Can you eat it? Fine for veggies & vegans, but not if you’re avoiding: wheat, gluten, onions, yeast and sulphites.

Should you put it in the trolley? Linda McCartney veggie sausages are among the best – they’re juicy and well-seasoned and they crisp up nicely too.
