I’ve tasted Sainsbury’s Baked Beans In Tomato Sauce… should you put a pack in the trolley or leave them on the shelf?

Sainsbury’s Baked Beans In Tomato Sauce blurb reads:  Baked beans in tomato sauce

OK: Good old baked beans. Growing up as a vegetarian in the 80s, my arrival at a friend’s house would often panic their parents. “What does he eat?” The answer, more often than not, was beans. Their pivotal role in my lack of starvation as a youngster gives them a hallowed place in my heart today – and they’re my go-to comfort food when I’m feeling sorry for myself. But will only Heinz do?

The tasting note: Of course not! I may swear by Heinz Ketchup and Salad Cream, but the company’s much-loved baked beans inspire no such brand loyalty. If you’re shopping in Sainsbury’s, buy Sainsbury’s own – they’re excellent. In fact, I’d put money on them winning a blind taste test with their fabled rival.

The full ingredient list: Haricot Beans (51%),Tomato Puree (33%), Water, Sugar, Modified Maize Starch, Salt, Seasoning (Salt, Onion Powder, Paprika, Rapeseed Oil, Clove Extract, Cinnamon Extract, Paprika Extract, Natural Flavouring: Chilli, Capsicum Extract, Garlic Oil).

Can you eat it? There’s onion and garlic in here, but non-allergic vegetarians and vegans can tuck in.

Should you put it in the trolley? Easily as good as any of its rivals. Unless only the big brands will do for you, stick a can in the trolley.
