What no sugar?

Can I Eat It iPhone App lets you know what is in the Lindt Gold Bunny Milk Chocolate

Food labelling has certainly got better over the last twenty years, but there are still plenty of unhelpful nutritional labels on the shelves that list sugar under the umbrella term of carbohydrate!  Not helpful if you need to reduce your sugar for health or dietary reasons.  All shoppers should question why there is no sugar value! Are they worried that displaying a high sugar value will affect sales?  Why won’t they let shopper make an informed choice? Shop smart. Check the nutritional labels of comparable product or quickly scan it with Can I Eat It? iPhone app.

Confused about the different types of sugars and sweeteners?  The below may be of help.

Sucrose (also known as table sugar) is mostly produced from sugar beet and sugar cane. There are many different styles and colours (from white granulated through to soft dark brown) on the supermarket shelves. This type of sugar is the most popular sweet additive in both food and drink.

Fructose: comes from fruit, honey and vegetables. This type of sugar tastes sweeter and is metabolized more easily than sucrose. It’s a healthier option than sucrose, but over indulge and you’ll still put on the pounds and rot your teeth!

Dextrose, also known as glucose, is often produced from maize, rice, wheat, and corn husk. Popular in energy and sports drinks.

Artificial Sugar or Sweeteners – common ones are aspartame, saccharin and sucralose. These are used in food and drink products as a sugar substitute and are very much sweeter than natural sugar and kinder to your teeth. A downside is that they can increase your appetite and their taste is not as palate-friendly as natural sugar.
