Trolley Trundle Food Price Check – June 2012

Are you annoyed that the cost of your trolley trundle keeps going up when the supermarkets are advertising that they are bringing the price down?  Most shoppers are!

There is no question that thousands of products get reduced each week, but there are also shedloads that increase in price! This type of up and down price manipulation often happens with products that are often bought together, for example, bread, butter and marmalade. The bread is reduced, but the butter and marmalade are sufficiently increased in price to cover the reduction and a little bit more.

Supermarkets aren’t doing anything new here! This tried and tested type of trading has been used by ‘barrow boys’ for centuries – giving with one hand and taking the given and a little extra with the other! Simple, but very profitable.

What is new however, is the supermarkets’ ‘ping pong pricing’ that’s now used to the sell their wines. This is a crazy up and down pricing system that has wine doubling or halving in price from one shopping trip to the next. So much so that even the most wine savvy shoppers, are left wondering what the ‘real’ price is. Obviously profitable, but not helpful for the wine shopper on budget!

Starting this month and to help a little with your trolley trundle we are providing monthly Can I Eat It? UK shopping trolley check. No smoke and mirrors – just the prices!   For example, over the last twenty four months the 24 food products below have gone up 17%.

McVitie’s is one of the leading brands on the biscuit shelves. A top quality milk chocolate digestive biscuit, but no better than the  supermarket’s cheaper own branded versions. Save your cash and buy the own brand!
