We are advised that we reduce our salt intake to 6g per day, Sound advice in anyone’s book – and, for most, if followed, will help to increase the ability to enjoy a healthy and longer life.
Sometimes however, the producer’s packaging is not has helpful as it should be for shoppers that want to keep their salt intake to 6g or below per day. For example, some labels list salt as sodium, which you have to multiply by 2.5 to gain the salt value. Waitrose disappointingly uses this practice! Shoppers should question why they have to do maths to find the salt level! What no salt value! Do they have something to hide? Fortunately for Can I Eat It? iPhone app users it automatically calculates sodium into salt as it scans – otherwise don’t forget the calculator!
Not helpful is the growing habit by producers to use double or piled up labels on their products to cut down the space needed for all the information required these days. Marmite is a high profile example, where you need peel or piggle back one label to reveal the nutritional values underneath. Want to find the salt level in a pot Marmite?
