I’ve tasted Heston from Waitrose’s Baked Alaska Dessert… should you put it in the trolley or leave it on the shelf?
The packet reads “Delicious raspberry parfait and smooth rich banana caramel parfait make this the tastiest Baked Alaska ever”.
OK! No question, straight from the boxed packaging, this is the most eye-pleasing Baked Alaska you’ll find on any shelf. However, to give it that extra appeal, it suggests that you caramelise the soft meringue coating with a blow-torch or put it under a hot grill. Great if you have blow-torch, but the hot grill only browns the top, not the sides!
Can you eat it? Not if you’re avoiding: egg, gluten, wheat, milk, lactose, soya, nuts, cochineal, beef gelatine and caffeine.

The tasting note: This eye-pleasing Baked Alaska delivers a flavoursome mix of raspberries, sponge and chocolate that comes topped with a soft banana meringue lick. Well-crafted, but it’s just too rich to have more than one slice…. which may be a good thing if you’re calorie counting!
Should you put it in the trolley? No if you’re looking for a dessert that has that ‘I must have another and another slice’ quality. Yes if you want to impress your dinner party guests with a well-crafted, eye-pleasing dessert that has been created by Heston Blumenthal.
