I’ve tasted Isabel’s Pizza Base Mix… should you put a pack in the trolley or leave them on the shelf?
Isabel’s Pizza Base Mix blurb reads: Now you can create delicious thin crust Neapolitan-style gluten-free and wheat-free pizzas, which taste just like the real thing, allowing you to bring the taste of Italy to your home.
OK: Isabel’s have developed a range of dry mixes that are naturally free from gluten and wheat. Using ingredients popular in South America, the range is unique in its use of cassava starch, a gluten-free flour that has a lot of natural elasticity.
The tasting note: Honestly the best gluten-free pizza I have ever tasted, Isabel’s Pizza Base Mix is a firm favourite in our household. The mix makes up a dough that is pliable, easy to roll out and doesn’t need rising. The flavour is very pleasant and the texture can either be chewy and glutinous or much crispier, depending on how long you bake it for. Much lighter and fresher than premade bases.
The full ingredient list: Cassava starch, Milk powder, Salt, Natural flavour
Cassava Starch? Made from the root of the same plant that gives us tapioca, cassava is the third-largest source of food carbohydrates in the world. It is especially popular in South America and Africa as it is one of the more drought-tolerant crops. It is high in carbohydrates but low in sugar.
Can you eat it? Contains milk. Gluten and soy-free. Low in salt and sugar.
Should you put it in the trolley? Add an egg, oil and water to this mix for delicious and fresh thin crust pizzas that are gluten-free, but still popular with those who can eat gluten. Each box can make up 4 large pizzas, which is incredible value for money in the expensive gluten-free market.
