Sainsbury’s Caramelised Onion Houmous blurb reads: Caramelised onion & sesame seeds dip
OK: Chick peas are incredible little things. Packed with protein, they are instrumental in two foods which seem to appeal to vegetarians and meat eaters in equal measure: falafels and houmous. This Sainsbury’s houmous adds a bit of extra interest with lots of caramelised onions.
The tasting note: This is one of the most moreish pots of houmous you’re likely to come across. With the caramelised onions making up more than a quarter of the ingredients, it’s no surprise that the flavour comes through. The muscovado sugar brings out their sweetness brilliantly, and there’s depth from the roasted garlic. Delicious.
The full ingredient list: Cooked Chickpeas (34%) (Water, Chickpeas); Caramelised Onion (27%); Rapeseed Oil; Water; Tahini (9%) (from Sesame); Concentrated Lemon Juice; Salt.Caramelised Onion contains: Onion, White Wine Vinegar, Muscovado Sugar, Rapeseed Oil, Roasted Garlic Purée.
Specific ingredient? Rapeseed oil started life as a steam engine lubricant, but new varieties bred out the bitterness which made it unpleasant to eat. It is now a major source of vegetable oil worldwide, and in the last decade has premium UK rapeseed oils establish themselves as a homegrown rival to extra virgin olive oil.
Can you eat it? Contains onion, sesame seed and garlic.
Should you put it in the trolley? Sweet and moreish – this is one of the most delicious pots of houmous you’re likely to come across.
