Vegan Caroline has tasted Lotus Caramelised Biscuit Spread Smooth

By Vegan Caroline
I’ve tasted Lotus Caramelised Biscuit Spread Smooth… should you put a pack in the trolley or leave it on the shelf?

Lotus Caramelised Biscuit Spread Smooth blurb reads: A perfect alternative to chocolate spread or peanut butter, this delicious sweet spread has all the taste of Lotus – but in a delicious spread! Simply spread it straight on to toast – no need for butter or margarine.

OK: You’ll have seen those individually wrapped complimentary little biscuits, sometimes named Speculoos, that you often get in cafés with your tea or coffee, well this is a spread made from them. The idea for this biscuit spread came about when someone suggested it for a television show that was looking for new foodie inventions.

Speculoos? A shortcrust biscuit that originated in Belgium and is now made and sold throughout Europe and beyond.

The tasting note: I love the biscuits, but have to admit that the thought of them in a spread didn’t initially appeal to me. This manages to be really addictive though and it’s easy to find yourself eating it straight from the jar with a spoon! As well as the obvious partner of toast it’s great as an ingredient. Try it in a buttercream filling for a coffee cake or whiz up a couple of spoonfuls in a blender with some frozen bananas to make a delicious instant soft serve ice cream style dessert.

The full ingredient list: Original Caramelised Biscuit (57%) (Wheat Flour, Sugar, Vegetable Oils (contains one or more of soy bean oil, sunflower oil, palm oil), Brown Sugar, Leavening (sodium bicarbonate), Soy Flour, Salt, Cinnamon), Canola Oil, Sugar, Emulsifier (soy lecithin), Citric Acid.

Can you eat it? Contains wheat, gluten & soya.

Should you put it in the trolley? An inspired idea. More than a delicious spread – it is also an exciting new baking ingredient.
