Veggie Tom has tasted Tyrrell’s English Summer Barbecue crisps

By Veggie Tom
I’ve tasted Tyrrell’s English Summer Barbecue crisps… should you put a bag in the trolley or leave them on the shelf?

The blurb reads: “Beach barbecue seasoned potato crisps. Windbreaks at the ready! Here’s a suitably smoky tribute to the jolly optimism of the English seaside barbecue. Chin up chaps, it might not rain.”

OK: Tyrrell’s make one of the best premium crisps on the market. They’re extremely crispy, very moreish and typically packed with good flavours – which is why I’ve always rated them over their main rival, Kettle Chips. The latter have a slightly oily, bitter quality after you’ve eaten a lot… and let’s be clear here: if I’ve bought a big bag of crisps, I’m planning to eat a lot.

The tasting note: Dreaming up new varieties can’t be easy. Tyrell’s has tried to put its own stamp on the classic barbecue flavour, but the result isn’t as good as it might be – the mix of spices gives it smokiness, depth and a touch of heat, but it’s so strong that it also leaves a lingering, bitter aftertaste.  There’s still a top quality crisp underneath, but this isn’t the flavour to go for.

Can you eat it? Veggie, vegan-friendly and gluten-free. Contains onion and garlic – and packed in a factory that handles milk, soya, gluten and mustard.

Should you put it in the trolley? Tyrrell’s make a cracking premium crisp. This flavour has sweetness, smokiness, spice and a little heat – but the flavouring is a bit strong and leaves a slightly bitter aftertaste.
