I’ve tasted Unearthed Free Range Spanish Omelette… should you put one in the trolley or leave it on the shelf?
The blurb reads: “Microwave in minutes. Enjoy hot or cold. Spanish potato omelette. Tortilla Espanola is one of Spain’s most popular snacks and we can see why! This one is slightly bigger than our snacking one, so you can make a delicious meal out of it! Try with unearthed cooking chorizo for a tasty tapas.”
Ingredients: Potato (50%), Pasteurised Free Range Whole Egg (27%), Fried Onion (15%), Sunflower Oil, Olive Oil, Salt, Stabilisers: Carrageenan, Xanthan Gum, Locust Bean Gum, Acidity Regulator: Citric Acid, Preservatives: Sodium Benzoate, Fried Onion contains: Onion, Olive Oil, Concentrated Lemon Juice
OK: Omelettes are so quick an easy to make at home, why would you fork out for a pre-made version? Well, cooking eggs may take minutes but preparing the sliced potatoes and fried onions for a Spanish omelette takes a good deal longer. So there may be something in it after all.
The tasting note: For an off-the-shelf omelette, this is surprisingly tasty. The egg has a nice texture and it’s all well seasoned. Plenty of potato makes it nice and filling, and the onion distributes its flavour pretty evenly throughout. It holds up well in the microwave, too.
Can you eat it? It’s veggie, but the egg content means it’s not vegan. And it contains onion, so avoid if you’re allergic to that.
Should you put it in the trolley? Shop-bought omelettes might not sound appealing, but this tastes pretty good. Nice texture, good seasoning, potato and onion well distributed. Tasted by Veggie Tom.

Unearthed Olives with Gouda & Cumin
There’s a nice sourness to the olives, the cumin taste is pronounced and there’s nothing wrong with the Gouda. But while it’s doubtless a high quality mix, the overall flavour lacks balance and punch. Tasted by Veggie Tom.
