Stuffed vine leaves are a seriously mixed bag. Hailing from Greece and the Middle East, these moreish little parcels of rice, onions and spices are delicious – but I’ve bought some pretty dodgy tinned versions. Saturated with gluggy oil, filled with mushy rice, too sharp and astringent, onions too raw, even too much mint (yes, it turns out that’s a thing). How, then, do these shape up?
Cooks & Co’s pitch is top notch ingredients – and these really do hit the mark. There’s a very sensible hand guiding the herbs and the filling keeps it simple – mostly rice, but with lots of flavour. The tight way they’re packed into the jar means the amount of oil needed is comparitively low, so they stay perky rather than claggy. All told, a really good stuffed vine leaf.

Ingredients: Rice (60%), Onion, Vine Leaves (10%), Soya Oil, Salt, Dill, Acidity Regulator: Citric Acid, Mint, Black Pepper.
Can you eat it? It’s veggie and vegan – just give it a miss if you’re avoiding soya or onions.
