Based in Virginia, USA, the Victory Brewing Company set up shop in 1996. It makes a big deal of its German training, its environmental credentials and its use of whole flower hops (rather than the more common processed pellets). So what do we think to Victory’s Headwaters, a “firmly crisp and aromatically arousing pale ale”?
It wouldn’t be fair to call this forgettable. But it is unremarkable – a clean-tasting, workmanlike take on a pale ale, with its flavours fairly balanced and restrained. The only thing that really leaps out is the lingering bitter bite that sticks around on your tongue. Still it’s solid, easy and very drinkable.

Victory Headwaters Pale Ale.
A good, clean-tasting pale ale with a long hop bite which slightly overstays its welcome. Tasted by Hoppy Gilmore.
