This jam has bags of character – the chunky mulberries give it an almost smoky note. Buy it if you want a change from the usual fruits.
So much of what we eat was borne of necessity. Jam’s a staple in British homes not merely because the taste of sweetened fruit is so universally loved, but because it’s an exceptional preservation method – a way to extend the lifespan of picked crops from days to years. But despite its popularity, just two fruits tend to dominate our shelves: strawberry and raspberry. So how about a change?
Mulberry is certainly that. Think blackberries but a little more tart, and with a slightly tougher texture that holds up better when cooked. This Tiptree jam is superb quality, like everything I’ve tried in the range (see below for reviews of Tawny Marmalade, Little Scarlet Strawberry Conserve and Damson Conserve). Of course, you pay a premium for that – but this thick, chunky, jam, with its deeply, almost smoky flavour, is well worth it if you’re looking for a preserve with bags of character.
