Tasted: Tracklements Beetroot and Horseradish Relish

By Veggie Tom
Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes. In case I’m not being clear enough, that’s a yes. This is a phenomenal relish.

The product
Horseradish is pretty divisive. It’s baffling that anyone could love a taste which – if you overdo the quantities – bursts up your nostrils like water at a swimming pool and makes your brain ache. But love it we do. A blob of horseradish, or its Eastern cousin wasabi, adds a constant element of fun and danger to dinner time. Just how much can you load onto your fork without incurring a painful penalty right in the sinuses? It’s a uniquely delicious balancing act.

The verdict:
If there’s one food that horseradish adores, it’s beetroot. There’s something about that sweet, earthy veg that tempers the spicy ingredient’s cruelest streak; meanwhile, the horseradish bestows untold zing onto its hearty purple bedfellow. A dab of horseradish butter took this Heston Blumenthal risotto to new heights, and the mixture also works wonders in Tracklements’ superb Beetroot and Horseradish relish. It’s spicy, sweet, earthy, punchy and deep – all the best features of both ingredients, concentrated. I absolutely love it.
