Well balanced spices, lovely deep flavours and a fresh, homemade taste. You’ll struggle to find tastier cook-in curry sauce.
I love curry. You love curry? There’s a special circle of Hell reserved for people who don’t love curry, and anyone who goes to a curry house and orders an omelette is buying themself a ticket. But recreating those flavours at home can be tricky – I’ve tried grinding my own spices and blending my own pastes and still the balance and depth of a good curry has proved elusive. It’s one reason the cook-in curry sauce is so popular; the other, of course, being how incredibly convenient it is.
I’ve tried my fair share of home-cook curries and curry sauces, but I don’t think I’ve tried better than Mamajaan’s. This London company currently does a range of four cook-in sauces (available at Ocado) and they are all excellent. The spices are beautifully balanced, the use of oil is sparing and the flavours are beautifully fresh. And when they’re hot (like the the punchy vindaloo) the chilli is really well integrated, its ferocity kept in check by the other ingredients. You can get much, much cheaper curry sauce – Sainsbury’s memorably launched one for just 9p – but to borrow one of that supermarket’s taglines, shell out more and you’ll taste the difference. Mamajaan’s sauces are genuinely excellent.
