In the past 12 months there’s been a huge increase in the sales and range of non- dairy milks. Whereas they were once associated just with vegans or allergy sufferers now all kinds of people seem to be trying them out and for the first time we’re seeing mainstream television and magazine advertising. It’s not just the traditional soya milk that has increased in range there’s now a range of milks made from oats, coconut, rice, almonds and hazelnuts.
I’ve been familiar with the Blue Diamond company for a few years as I am a big fan of their Smokehouse Almonds which come in handy snack packages. Now they also produce an almond milk. A big selling point in their advertising is that the almond milk is low fat and has less than half the calories of skimmed milk or unsweetened soya. So how does it taste?
I tried the unsweetened almond milk in several different ways. I wouldn’t normally drink a glass of plant milk ice cold from the fridge but this really worked for me and it was also a good addition to smoothies. The almond milk also fared very well on cereal, in porridge and in cake baking. I was a little disappointed with it in tea and coffee, probably because it doesn’t lighten the drinks as well as soya milk and I kept putting too much in and cooling the drink too much. The other thing that I found was that my taste buds could faintly pick up the sea salt in the ingredients. Whilst I found this distracting in tea or coffee it was an absolute plus point for hot chocolate giving really interesting flavours. I will definitely buy this unsweetened brand again but probably reserve it for baking and bedtime drinks.
