It won’t fool you into thinking it’s coffee but this is a pleasant tasting caffeine free hot drink. One to try if you’re looking for something different.
Ok, although this has the word coffee in it’s title it hasn’t been anywhere near a coffee bean. Instead it’s a new naturally caffeine free drink made from organic roasted barley produced in Italy. The particular type of hulless or naked barley that it’s made from has a high content of beta-glucans which has been recognised for its role in lowering cholesterol and glucose levels. It has been used since the Greek times for it exceptional action on the metabolism.
Freshly brewed this has a good roasted aroma. It doesn’t have the complexity of coffee but it’s got nice toasty flavours and some pleasant bitterness. It’s the first time that I’ve seen a roasted barley product like this which isn’t instant though they do make an instant version as well. I love the process of making coffee so it appealed to me that I could make this in the same way – with a filter, cafetiere, stove top espresso maker etc. I decided to give up coffee for February so this has been a great discovery and one that I’ll carry on drinking when I’m looking for a caffeine alternative. I especially liked that I could enjoy this as a bedtime drink. I liked the taste best when paired with a sweetened, vanilla heavy type of soya milk.
