Tasted: Vita Coco Natural Coconut Water 1 Litre

By Vegan Caroline
A soft drink that’s good for you! Sweet and slightly malty tasting and best served chilled.

The Product:
Not to be confused with coconut milk, this product comes from the liquid inside young green coconuts not the brown hairy ones. It’s low in calories but high in electrolytes and is marketed as a fat free, low calorie way to stay hydrated. It’s become widely available in the last year with many people using it as an alternative to sugar and caffeine heavy energy drinks. I’ve been drinking this stuff for a few years and am delighted that it’s so easy to find these days. At one time I could only get it from stalls selling fresh coconuts at vegan or raw food fairs which would be hacked open with a machete and a straw inserted! Now it’s available in cartons in lots of newsagents and convenience stores.

The Verdict:
If you’ve not tried coconut water before I’d recommend swapping the sugary, carbonated drinks and giving this great natural product a go. I find it’s a good substitute for a mid afternoon cup of coffee and also gives you a boost if you’re ill or feeling under the weather. It’s really high in potassium and the water is sweet, yet slightly malty tasting. It’s best drunk chilled straight from the fridge. The flavour is quite different to any other soft drink or fruit juice so if you find it’s not quite to your taste maybe give one of the flavoured versions a go or try adding it to a smoothie instead of milk.
