Morrisons Titanic Brewery American Red Ale? If you like your red ales malty and rich, the heavy hops of this very average own-brand beer aren’t for you. Scan one from the branded beer shelves!
The product
I wasn’t bowled over by my last taste of Morrisons’ Specially Selected range – this golden ale made by Black Sheep Brewery. But there’s a different outfit behind this American Red Ale: Titanic, from Stoke-on-Trent. The brewery has picked up more than its fair share of CAMRA awards, but plaudits don’t always translate to a great supermarket own label beer.
The verdict:
American red ales often deliver a rich maltiness – and they can be known for high hopping. Stick your nose in this one and you might well find a touch of toffee and tiny bit of banana; take a sip and you’re hit with immediate, heavy bitterness and jammy, sour plum. It finishes with a long-lasting bitterness. The overall effect is of a red ale lacking in richness, with its hops not quite in balance. It’s easy to drink but completely forgettable.
