This tiny seed is a powerhouse of goodness and adds easily to your diet through smoothies, baking or puddings.
Chia seeds are very rich in essential Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids and what makes them so special is that the fatty acid ratio is 3:1 which is the optimum ratio. They are also rich in high quality protein, vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. Chia has a multitude of uses and can be enjoyed sprinkled on muesli, slipped into a smoothie or baked into cakes and breads. They are also popular soaked in various liquids to make chia puddings. Available as both black or white seeds both types have the same nutritional profile.
This tiny crunchy black seed looks pretty unassuming and on their own they are fairly neutral tasting. For me they come into their own when soaked in liquid. They undergo a transformation swelling up and forming a gel around them binding together other ingredients such as fruit, nuts and plant milks. They work well in this way to make a chia pudding or as one of my favourite grab and go breakfasts – overnight oats.
