NO GO for Vegetarians – Loyd Grossman

By Veggie Tom
Can readers let their veggie friends know that Loyd Grossman, Creamy Mushroom & Thyme Sauce, labelled with a  Veggie Logo and printed with Suitable for Vegetarians is a NO GO for vegetarians – as it is made with animal rennet.

Daily Mail: “Loyd Grossman has been accused of abusing consumer trust for selling a pasta sauce incorrectly labelled as ‘suitable for vegetarians’ since 2011.

The ingredients of the TV chef’s Creamy Mushroom and Thyme sauce include Parmigiano Reggiano, or Parmesan cheese, made with rennet containing an enzyme from the stomach lining of calves.”

The gaffe was spotted by the food website Can I Eat It?, whose vegetarian expert Tom Hay  (Veggie Tom) said: ‘This is basic stuff – clearly somebody hasn’t done their homework. Proper Parmesan is a no-no for vegetarians.’

‘It might taste good, but there are strict rules on how it’s made which insist on the use of animal rennet.

‘Putting “suitable for vegetarians” on your pack isn’t a public service – it’s good for sales. And declaring it falsely is a an abuse of consumer trust.’

Premier Foods admitted its mistake and put out the following statement: Read the statement
