The product:
The little luxury tins by spice specialist Bart look the part on the supermarket shelves – but at just under £4 a pop, these blends need to hit the mark. I tasted six: fiery Ethiopian Berbere seasoning, a spicy Creole blend, sweet-savoury Ras el Hanout from North Africa, herby-sesame Zatar from the Middle East, plus blends devised for fish and fajitas. So how did they shape up?
The verdict:
You can read the results by scrolling down – but in short, it’s a solid thumbs up. There’s a good sense of balance in play across the range, but my hands down favourite is the spicy Creole blend. Paprika, onion and garlic give it a moreish depth and black pepper and cayenne lend two levels of heat, making a really versatile mix that works in all kinds of soups, stews and sauces. The whole range is worth your time, but Creole’s a real cracker.

Can you eat it? Of course this is veggie and vegan – but those with garlic or onion allergies need to give it a miss.
