Tasted: Shepherd Neame Double Stout

Hoppy Gilmore
A rich, punchy stout, filled with dark bitter flavours, a pronounced roasted character and a dry, slightly austere finish.

The product
Last time we tried a Shepherd Neame beer, we weren’t impressed. Mainbrace was a profoundly unremarkable IPA produced by the brewery for the Asda Extra Special, and it was anything but special – so this stout has some ground to make up. Two things count in its favour: (1) there’s usually more pride at stake when you’re not brewing for a supermarket label, and (2) you’d typically expect double stout to pack a punch.

The verdict:
And it does. This is a rich, gutsy stout, filled with dark bitter flavours and a pronounced roasted character. There’s coffee in there, and cocoa too if you squint – all delivered with a dry, slightly austere finish. A confident, complex slow sipper.
