The raw chocolate market is expanding all the time. Essentially it’s chocolate made without heating the ingredients which preserves more of the natural minerals and antioxidants from the cacao bean. The theobromine naturally found in raw cacao is a mild, non-addictive stimulant that some believe can treat depression.
The Product:
Ombar are one of the leading names in raw chocolate and produce a really wide range of interesting flavours pairing up chocolate with various superfoods such as green tea, acai berries, goji berries and blueberries. Rather than refined sugar their bars are all sweetened with coconut sugar. They also all have the addition of Bio Live cultures – probiotics to help maintain a healthy digestive system.
The Verdict:
Ombars are a must try for anyone interested in trying raw chocolate or indeed for any chocolate fan. The natural ingredients they use come together incredibly well to create a taste sensation. The coconut sugar adds a caramel sweetness and the coconut cream lends a creaminess to even the darker bars in the range with a higher cacao content. The strawberry and cream flavour to this bar works really well and I also loved the snappy texture of the bars which was just like a standard chocolate bar which isn’t always the case with raw chocolate. Also, unlike non raw chocolate, a little goes a long way with this stuff as it’s richer and more satisfying. Each 35g bar is 6 pieces and I found myself eating them over three sittings.
